[Verizon] Full Device Encryption w/ Custom ROMs/Recovery

So I'm not sure if this is a dumb question, but has any work been done on the topic of allowing a custom Recovery to access an encrypted device? At the moment, it appears that no work has been done on this, but it seems like it would be both useful, and should be possible, though I'm not really sure how the Recovery image is formed, or if the device encryption code has been released as a open module that developers can use. Any thoughts?
