Version 1.82.605.6, it's a security update. Check in Settings to see if you're up to date.

Mine just started without asking permission or even notifying me. My phone slowed down and I noticed the download icon in the notification bar. I wish they would have asked. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The same thing happened to me markdoc - I wish they'd told me. I just happened to pick up my phone to check something and noticed that it was downloading something (which freaked me out since I don't have anything set to auto-update from the Play store). I don't think I would have noticed until it buzzed on restart otherwise....

So far, I haven't noticed much change. Which is fine with me. I've had phones get worse after updates. That's why I worry. Good luck.

There *should* be a setting in update menu allowing it to download an update automatically over wifi etc... This is completely separate from Play Store settings.

Yeah, these options have been there for years and have not changed in a number of years.
I can't remember for sure, but I think in the past certain mobile carriers have hijacked or reprogrammed the software update settings screens.

Home -> Settings -> About Phone -> Software Updates -> 'Update over Wifi Only' ('Auto-download system updates' , 'Auto-update apps')

On Sprint and T-Mobile you can choose to turn off Auto-download system updates and Auto-update Apps. With Verizon, It looks like the only option is to force the update to download over wifi. If you only use wifi, your download probably would just start itself, shamefully. There should still be a hard stop before the install takes place, a check box to confirm you want to install the recently downloaded file should come up (Install Now and OK should have to be confirmed). But maybe Verizon took that out too?

Verizon gives you the least control of the carriers. I don't know why but with the latest update, it downloaded to my phone without notice. The only choice I had was to install it immediately or wait for another time. What makes it worse is their behind in features too. Sometimes I wonder why I stay with them.

No, it gives you the choice to install whenever you want. But the 'update over wifi' option you were talking about is definitely gone on my VZW HTC 10. The 'Software Updates' choice in 'About' simply isn't there.

Being that I don't have the 10 in hand (especially not the Verizon), thanks for confirming 100%
That is terribly troubling. So where do you access any Software Update info at then?

Yeah, I think Verizon maybe is the carrier that I alluded to earlier that has 'hijacked or reprogrammed the software update setting screen' on past devices.
The fact that the HTC web documentation for Verizon was different than the Sprint and T-Mobile versions further supported.

Instead of Settings>About, You go to Settings>System Update where you have 2 options: Chech for new system update, or Show system update history.
Below that is LAST SYSTEM UPDATE with details about the last update. Just says congratulations and you should charge your phone
