Help (Verizon) Static Noise Outside of Music Player

I've had the galaxy s3 for a while, now. I mostly use it without headphones, and occasionally I listen to music with headphones. However, I've noticed a problem. On the occasional event that I want to watch a video with headphones, the only noise I hear is ungodly static crackling. This also happens in apps, and even with the built in sound effects used in the UI. However, the music player works fine with no static. What could the problem be?

P.S. I'm running the official 4.1.2 from Samsung, no root or anything.

Sounds like the headphone jack could use a good cleaning, as it's not making a clean connection to the headphones themselves.
There are a few youtube videos showing how to do this.
