there is so much going on with our phones since the bootloader was "unlocked" but this forum is so dead!

i know these forums are a little more noob friendly...and the devs themselves dont come here like they used to back in the day...but there is so much to talk about here!...come on fellas! lets start modding and talking about ROMs and kernels!!

Yeah, I don't get it either. XDA is cooking as is RW about the S3 and there is nary a post here. Oh well stuff like that happens I guess.

there are a ton more resources available now...! times have'a changed since the first droid phone... i blame Ultimate Droid. things here were peaceful and friendly and he introduced us to the word kang :(

    j/k kinda

for me, i'm just reading what u guys are talking about. i went back to strock rooted. IMEI, camera, bluetooth blah blah... once the kinks get worked out (and they will) i'll participate more!!

my big choice is what do i do, because i have a GNex glaring at me for sticking with the S3 for a little while....

even in the DX days...the devs never came over here (always hung out at other forums) but this place was still hopping like crazy with all sorts of posts and mods and such...

yeah, you had to go elsewhere to find the ROMS themselves but these forums were still great

I agree. This place was always a port in a storm and still is. You think maybe there are just not enough s3 phone out there? Were you here the weeks before the gnex hit the market ? Hundreds of posts per hour. I also think the mods at rw and xda got things under control so more people are hanging there with the devs participating much more.

I also think that even though this phone is hands above the gnex a lot of people don't have an upgrade yet.

i'm a phone junkie and had a DX for about 2 weeks and also noticed that the devs shy'd away from here?

the ROM guys are developing their own sites it seems like. BAMF took it to the next level because people didn't understand the hatred from XDA.

personally i think ROOTZ is the culprit but AF will always be my first stop!!

If you look at post number on the sub forum menu the Verizon s3 had more than other carriers. I also I think it's only been out for a short amount of time and a lot people are still on contract with the gnex.

Right now my head is spinning with all the ROM choices:
    CM9/10
    AOKP ICS and JB
    NoSympathy
    Synergy (what I'm running now)
    Bean's
    Jellybro
    Liquidsmooth
Redemption (what I'm thinking of moving to)
    and many others

It's tough to keep them all straight and figure out which one I want.

jerofld needs to do some serious updating on his sticky.

If Rolo's guide post can get stickied I think between the two of us we can take care of ALL your concerns

    Stuck.

Mind also PMing Jero with what needs removed? I don't own this phone so it wouldn't know where to start or what to remove.

xda seems to be where the action is but wading through soooo much crap posts, conversations, and mile-high signatures is a bit cumbersome. There are just too many people--half of which repeatedly ask, "Do I need to clear cache?", "How do I root?" </ugh>

    heh

For now, I'm keeping it stock, rooted so I can get a baseline. I briefly ran Synergy 1.4 and got network errors and a lockup on the road. Since I don't have a baseline, I don't know if the culprit was just a fluke/bad connection, the ROM, or the phone.

I ran Synergy a little. I found that signing into Google Now, and Google now in general, led to extra Android System usage which brought slightly higher temperatures and cpu usage. In fact, no matter whether I ran a rom with Google Now or just added it to the stock rooted rom via the mod, I got the same result. Virtually every screen touch made my cpu jump to max(1.5ghz) for a second. This caused my phone to run about 5 degrees hotter than normal and led to some, not a lot, of extra drain. So I have just stuck with root66 rom and added some mods, like Wallet and notification bar and some other little things. I think that Google Now is not quite ready for prime time on these phones.

I know, it's like all the Phandroiders are asking their newbie questions at xda now. What gives with that?

Let's get the guide post constantly updated and see what we can do to change it...

As for Synergy...SO much has changed since 1.4...they have moved on to nightly status and things are great!

Google Now does seem to be a little bit of a resource hog...I only use it for the search feature now...have all the "cards" turned off...

I think people want to be where the developer are...but I think if we make a real effort to keep guide threads updated and filled with good info we can make it work

I appreciate the noob friendliness of this board. Coming from the Droid X2, there was not much in the way of development. Since the bootloader unlock happened, XDA has exploded and it is a bit overwhelming at first.

I am currently running the CM10 Nightly build from 8/20 and it is great. I prefer AOSP to TW; but I have gained a greater appreciation for the features TW adds. Rolo's guide is exactly what I would be looking for when preparing to unlock the potential of my device. It is terrific to have all of the information in one easy to read format. Root > Unlock > Flash makes sense to the average user.

One thing I would like to see are the instructions on how to backup/restore your IMEI.

Thanks guys, keep up the good work.

BTW, I did PM jero about his All Things Root Guide. He said we can create a thread with suggestions that he'll check ~weekly and update the Guide. But do we want to do that or just go with Rolo's thread now that it is stickied?

FWIW, I think jero's format for that thread would be REALLY helpful for a noob like me, if it were kept up to date. Once a week, however is not enough.

If folks can keep Rolo's thread more current and perhaps even add content that mirrors the structure of jero's original thread, that would be ideal.

XDA is an intimidating place for non-dev-types. Every time I read a post excoriating someone for asking a question, I get less inclined to contribute to the effort. Here, on the other hand, I think people are willing to help and people are free to ask questions. We've got a great device, especially now with an unlocked bootloader and a good choice of ROMs.

I'm probably not much help, but I'll help where I can. And I thank all the really smart ones who help others out here every day. You make this a great place to learn.

What does TW add? I'm having a hard time seeing a difference beyond a crummy launcher and a few widgets.

I think some of the apps require the TW rom to work, like the camera and some of the sharing capabilities. My wife and I both have S3s, and I am hoping we'll make use of those cool sharing capabilities (though we haven't).

I have a hunch that when (not if) I move to a non-TW rom, I'll discover things that I miss and can't have away from TW.

OT: Do you really live near Pike's Peak? I lived there for several years and climbed the mountain a bunch of times, once on New Year's Eve. Beautiful place to live when fires aren't burning out of control. :(
