Root [Verizon] What is GAPPS?

Sorry if I missed it, as I did do a search, but can anyone explain to me what GAPPS is all about?

I'm 99.9 percent sure it means Google apps.

It is a package of Google apps that is flashed in recovery when flashing an aosp custom rom.

That's what I thought as well....It's just that I do not see mention of it much anymore when viewing a custom ROM....what's the need for it?

It is used for core apps that the phone needs to operate; like the play store, camera, gallery, keyboard, Google now/voice search, etc.

And might I add that some roms include those apps. Like TW etc.
Most, if not all AOSP roms will need to have the GAPPS package flashed in addition to the rom like jhawk mentioned earlier.
If the rom description says to flash the GAPPS, then so be it.
If it makes no mention of it, then no need to flash.
