Help Very bad gallery lag when trying to view photos.

Hey all,
Tried to post something about this last night but it doesn't look like it posted, so I'll try again.
Having some very very bad lag when trying to view a picture in the gallery.
I do have a ton of pictures (about 600 it says) but when I try to show my friends a picture I just took and it takes minutes to load (IF it loads at all) and m/y buddy's Iphone (who has 1,000 + pics in his!) Loads instantly with no lag.
As a matter offact as I'm typing this the letters are lagging too!
I tried to hold X and reboot to cleaqr the phone cache to speed up the gallery but that didn't work.
Anybody got any ideas or should I just have my friends take pictures with their iphones from now on?

Clearing the phone cache would slow the gallery down, if anything. I think this problem is common enough to just explain it by saying the stock Android gallery software just isn't very good at handling large numbers of pictures.

I haven't tried any 3rd party gallery applications but that's an option to see if they are any better.
