My GF brought a galaxy S GT-I9000 from ebay used, It arrived yesterday when switching it on there were a number of pop up "sorry" messages relating to applications that couldnt run. We restored factory settings In Settings>Privacy

phone restarted and expected to see all previous owners apps removed however it didnt. (once we had passed setup screens). We then manually deleted all the Apps in the settings>manage applications screen. rebooted the phone and after it rebooted the apps were all there again.

We then installed the Kies software and performed a Update to gingerbread firmware and hoped this would rectify the problems to no luck.

Connecting the phone to the pc allows you to view internal memory files and you can even format the drive but no sooner as you remove the usb lead the phone remounts the drive and (from somewhere puts them all back on again - including the apps photos taken by previous owner and music files)

We then found the switch on with VOL UP + HOME + POWER function and deleted cash and master reset it a number of times to no avail.

Last night i even Rooted the phone with
    cf-root-xx_xeu_jpy-v1.3-busybox-1.17.1.tar

This displayed the S screen and constantly buzzed the vibrator and nothing else.

So then installed (with Odin 1.3)

    CSC_OXAJVK.tar.md5
    PDA_XXJVK_Sbl.tar.md5
    PHONE_XXJVK.tar.md5
    s1_odin_20100512.pit

In a last ditched attempt and resolving the issues! The phone now boots to the setup language screen and bombards us with loads of "sorry" messages finally you complete the setup screens and it displays message "Sorry The Application Setup Wizzard (process com.android.setupwizzard) has stopped unexpectedly. please try again"

Its like the phone is restoring Internal memory files from elsewhere in the phone and screwing everything up....

    HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is there an external SD card installed? Check under the battery cover, next to the SIM card. If so, take it out and reflash the phone again using Odin as you previously did.

Ok try this, this will totally wipe and restore your phone.

    Turn your phone off.
Enter recovery mode. Do this by Holding the up volume key the centre home button and the power on button all at the same time. Release it once the phone starts to boot up.
this will present you a menu. Use the volume up and down keys to move up and down the menu. Fistyly do a wipe data/factory reset, then wipe cache partition. this will reset the phone as new and should remove everything that was on it before.

If there is an SD card in the slot under the battery cover you can wipe it as well. once the phone has booted up and is running press the bottom left hand soft key this will bring up some optionsselect settings then select sd card and phone storage. then select unmount sd card. this will then highlight a format sd card option. Selecting this will wipe the card. then you can remount it and you are good to go.

    Hope all this helps :)

hi again I just tried that again in that order and still the same issues!

    here are the images:

The last picture is as far as the phone will go after the setup. And despite constantly trying to delete and format internal memory via pc connection it all re-appears again after rebooting.

are you sure you have the I9000 ? and not the canadian or the brazillian version ?
if so , then try going with this guide

    [GUIDE] Final v10.1 - Official DarkyROM - Gingerbread (JVH) - Noob-Friendly | DarkyROM

you don't have to install darky's rom , this guide will show you how to reflash and wipe everything and root to the latest version 2.3.3 JVH
you can install darky's rom or stay with samsung's .. try it and see if your issues are solved

ps: I think you can format the internal memory from recovery mode too [vol up + home + pwr button] .. not sure though

    ok thanks for the suggestions.

Ive tried the last rooting option and yes the VOL UP + HOME + ON does give more options of formatting etc however Ive formatted all and its still not been able to clear the internal memory. It doesnt say it hasnt cleared or formatted but when installing the firmware after it just does the same as the pictures above.

Any ideas what else i can do?

Contact the seller on Ebay and demand a refund.

    Being serious here.

Was the item described as working or not?

I doubt very much if this will reinstall anything. Where did you get this information?

Trust me it does. Its deletes everything and reinstalls the firmware. Iv used it many times.
If you don't believe me try it.

    Two points.
The link you give is for a Samsung Galaxy I7500. Do all phones use the same codes?
Secondly, where does it reinstall the firmware from?

Some will will be along who knows more about it but I am sure you are wrong.

No I'm not wrong. I own a i9000 and have used this code many times. It reinstalls the firmware currently flashed to your phone and deletes everything.

Here is a better link. I was in a rush earlier and it was the first thing I found on Google. It does say froyo but it also works on gb

Thanks for that I was sure I was right.
Just a reset and no firmware reinstall.
