When I view web pages its quite a few is there an easier way to get to my home screen than pressing backup all the time passing all the pages I've seen before I get back to the beginning, thanks

Yes that's how android works. It puts the internet into a dormant background state so that you can quickly start using it again.

If you want to exit completely by the back button you could use the windows to make this easier. Open up a new window containing only your homepage then then close all your others using the small cross in the top right corner of each. Then you only have to press back once to exit out of your homepage.

I used to use the home button and then the Internet widget to re-open the net, but I found that eventually links on web pages wouldn't open and I got a message " maximum number of pages are opened " ( or something similar ). Using the back button to close each page until I got back to my home screen sorted it.

There is no need to do that. I suspect the message you had was about the maximum number of windows open. If you get that just press menu and select windows, then close any you are no longer using by clicking the cross in the top right corner.
