This article from PCMag is 6 months old but I just found it and didn't see anything in a forum search..

Virgin Mobile: Don't Root Our Android Phones PCMAG.com June 13, 2011

"We do not endorse in any way end users using a non-officially tested operatingsystem nor do we approve of 'rooting' devices. This constitutes a violation of our terms of service and puts our network in jeopardy," a spokesperson said. "We endeavor to provide users a customizable Android experience within the limits of the tested and network approved Android OS."

I was wondering how it would put their network in jeopardy?

But do to a supreme court judgment against Apple it is completely legal to make any modifications to any mobile device once it is in the possession of the owner. However they own the network and can block modified units from accessing there network as Sony does with any modified unit on there PlayStation network.

What Ben said is true. Legally, Virgin Mobile has no say if we root our phones or remove their OS or software to replace it with our own. ;)

Question though, after installing a custom ROM, are you removing any sort of spyware virgin may or may not be using to track what operating system your phone currently has?

Although all of us with the older OV's were able to use hotspot without rooting, it was just hidden.
