Root [Virgin Mobile] Turning Phone Into WiFi Access Point

As the title says. I really don't need to share the data connection from the phone, I just need to create an AP that my Canon 6D can connect to so that I can use my phone to control it remotely.

I was previously dropping the hotspot with the tethering feature of CM10, but that feature is not ion the stock VM S3 settings. Do I have to root my phone and flash a ROM, or is there an easier and safer way to accomplish this?

You should try the "wifi tether" app, which does require root access though.
