My browser on my HTC Evo started giving me a suspicious message this morning and, simultaneously, my gmail account was hacked (sending out spam). Do I have a virus?

The message my browser gives me is: "This page does not support your version of browser. Please update your software." This is followed by a button labeled "Browser update." The background of the message is a dark red. It appears whenever I try to get to a website - google.com, cnn.com, etc. I've attached a pic of the message to this post.

My browser is Internet version 2.2

I cleared all the data using the applications settings menu and I also powered down and restarted the device.

    Help! What to do?

Do I need to get all medieval on it w/ a factory reset? Or is there something else I can do short of that?

Also, for the good of the community...

    - Is this in fact or virus? Or some other problem?
    - If a virus, is it new? (I've seen no mention of it elsewhere...)
    - If old virus, what is it and how to prevent it?

A factory reset would be the sure way to get rid of whatever it is. Anti-virus is a little late in the game, most work by blocking the virus before it gets installed.

Well obviously somithing software related is giving you trouble. If you supect a virus, which it could be, or it could be a bug you picked up along the way. either way a factory reset should wipe it. When I was having issues like that I wiped my sd card too.

I really know very little about this sort of problem and apologize if this is irrelevant, but googling the error message you report turns up a lot of references to it appearing when a wireless router or a different computer on a network has been compromised. Do you see the error screen when on 3G, or just wifi?

Thank you for your lead! I disabled Wifi and am able to connect normally!

I did find this link which I am now reading with great interest: XP Security Center, redirecting, now infected router and network PCs

I did not however, find any others. Were there any others you found that seemed useful?

Mostly just forum chatter from other people seeing the issue (on their computers, not their phones, which supported my gut feeling that this isn't an Android sort of issue). No quick cures, but I didn't spend more than a couple of minutes on it. To see the same hits, just google "This page does not support your version of browser", in quotes so it will search for the exact phrase and not the individual words.
