Have you enabled USB Debugging from phone settings "developer options"?

If your trying to root you may find the link below of some interest. I can't vouch for the credibility of the site so use good judgment. Good luck

do you have oem bootloader unlocked enabled via dev option in addition to usb debugging that @MrJavi suggested? but according to the link (thanx @MrJavi ) you do not need to unlock the bootloader. what guide are you following? do you have a link?

its weird that the link says you can root with a custom recovery which is true in this case, but the guide still has you installing the twrp recovery......weird!!!!!

you are lying, vivo y12 is running on android 9 and not 8.1 .....

on your site it is written The Vivo Y12 comes with a MediaTek processor. It runs on Android 8.1 Oreo out-of-the-box.

Perhaps the phone launched with 8.1 and has since been updated to 9?

no he is not "lying". that is a pretty harsh word...... the article was written in june 2019. as @codesplice suggested the phone came out of the box(from the article) with android 8.1. but that does not mean it is not upgradeable to android 9.
