VM Billing Question

    Hi All!

I first joined VM in late 2010, back when they had the $25/month plan. I upgraded from the (POS) Samsung Intercept to the (slightly better) Motorola Triumph a few months later, and was grandfathered into the $25/month plan. I had the Triumph for about a year and a half.

On September 18, I bought a Samsung Galaxy Ring, and swapped it out on the website. Thinking that VM would change me to the $35/month plan, I bought a couple of $35 airtime cards, too.

My payment date is the 27th of each month. VM didn't charge me anything to swap phones, and I just figured that they were being nice because I only had 9 days left in that billing cycle. They had already withdrawn the $25 for the next month, and they (surprisingly) didn't ask for any more money for that month, either. And VM charged me $25 on 11/27, and the website says my next payment will be $25 and is due on 12/27.

So, I guess what I'm asking is... how long does it take VM billing to catch up with my phone swap? They're not going to keep billing me $25/month for the next 6 months, and then turn around and say "oh, by the way, we're going to need $80 from you for all those months me only charged you $25!" are they? For the record, my phone works fine, and the "My Account" section of the website shows the correct phone, so they know I have the Ring.

TL;DR: Had $25/mo plan, swapped phones, still have $25/mo plan. What do?

I had an HTC One V on a $25 plan for months before I sold it (with plan). Not only did Virgin Mobile never ask for the difference, but when I quit paying for a few months, they gave me a free month of service and STILL kept the phone on the $25 plan :D

I don't know if in fact this is true but here's my take on this:

Upgrading to another 3G-only phone--regardless of its release date as had been stipulated previously, I believe VM is now allowing the GF'ed $25/month plan to continue and carryover to the new *3G-only* phone. However, if upgrading to a 4G-LTE phone, I'm fairly certain that the higher rate (i.e., $35/month) would apply. This is one way for VM to retain GF'ed subscribers that are not getting anything more in term of services by upgrading their 3G-only phones. Upgrading to 4G-LTE is an upgrade in data speed, so it could be justified for the rate increase. Again, this is my take on this...

Ah, so the issue may be 3g vs 4lte. As well, it seems, to only swap phones and not select a new plan?
So far I did the right thing, just paid em $25. I still don't know if I'd keep the iphone4 if or when I get it and can't cancel the order till after wednesday.

This makes the decision harder! I can't tell if VM will allow me to keep the $25 plan with the 3g iphone 4 unless I activate it and that may make it harder to return if I decide I want the S3 instead.

Life would be SO much easier if only I could poop money so it wasn't a motivating factor in such decisions. Then again you have cash coming out of your butt, something wrong there...

I can't say for the iPhones now, as anything Apple costs a premium, and companies know that... VM treats it differently too--auto-pay by CC for a $5/month discount only applies to the iPhones. I should've been more specific but my previous speculation was made with their Android phone offerings in mind, and based on the postings I've read on various VM forums about phones upgrading without losing their GF'ed plans...
