I'm attempting to use Instagram in a virtual machine wuth VMWare. It tells me I don't meet the camera specs, because there obviously isn't a camera. is there something I could use to emulate a camera at the hardware level?

Don't know about emulating a camera and spoofing Instagram, but VMware can pass the host computer's USB devices to the guest OS, Android. Could try actually plugging a USB webcam in and see if Android can use it, using the VMware guest OS settings. Doing this certainly works for things like Ubuntu or Windows as a guest OS, it's just a question of if Android-x86 can use a PC webcam in this manner, and if Instagram likes it.
