Voice to text?!

I thought this was supposed to be a huge feature in 2.1, am I missing the option to activate it? Was hoping to dictate texts and email, but I don't see the mic symbol on my input keyboard, and a cursory search of google nets results that point toward menu options that don't exist on my hero...

again, thanks for the suggestions, but isn't this supposed to be a OS feature and NOT something I'd need to download a 3rd party app for? can someone tell me what options I'm missing to activate this?

it is enabled in the OS. The problem is that the HTC keyboards that come with Sense UI don't have that feature enabled. If you were using the standard Android keyboard, it would have the feature. That's why downloading a different keyboard or using Handcent allows voice to text.

good to know! thanks!

Anyone know of other keyboard apps that allow access to the voice-to-text feature? Hate to sound like a deadbeat, but I don't really want to pay for an add-on...

If your rooted, you an download the xda keyboard which is identical to the htc one but with way more options and includes the little mic for text to speech. It even has an option for how much of a vibration you feel when you type. Its awesome in my opinion. I also loaded the new gallery apk from the nexus one. Let me know if you need the apk files. Once again if your rooted.

You'll want "Low resolution version for Android 1.6 and up"
I'm assuming the hi-rez version is not supported on hero due to screen tech specs, correct?

How do I install the file once I've got it? will dragging it onto the device via USB mode work? any particular folder it needs to go into?

If you are using one of the many third party keyboards, there will be a key with a mic icon on the keyboard, just press it. I am using Better Keyboard and very satisfied, have spoken all my texts and anything else I need to enter for the past few days and very happy.

Does not exist on the standard HTC keyboard.
