Well it seems there is a small speaker on the rear of the phone. When the phone is lying down on a surface, esp. a surface that is soft..towel, bed ect..the speaker gets muted. So you dont hear the full volume of the phone. So esp. in your pocket because of the phone lying up against the fabric it will be muted. On a hard surface this happens also but not to the same extent.

You mean face down the OS mutes it ?

Or its so small anything covering it makes it sound like its almost muted ?

The later of your 2. The speaker is flush with the back of the phone, so as soon as it's sat down on fabric, etc. you lose the sound.

I'm betting that when they start making hard and rubber cases for this, they will have a larger opening there.
