Here is the deal. I have had my evo for close to a year now and never rooted it. (Yea I know)
I am thinking about buying the Nexus S 4g, but it is so close in specs why not make my Evo do the same thing right?

Well here I am. A newb to rooting asking for you all (The Gods of root) to bless me with your wisdom.
What can I do to make this evo as close to vanilla Android 2.3 as possible.

P.S. I really want to use my hotspot for free too lol
    Thanks,
    The Herd.

Have you rooted yet? I would install CM7, it is Vanilla Android built from code released by Google. It is slightly more difficult to install then some ROMs but it is the best Stock Android ROM. I even think it runs Stock Android better than the Nexus S, it also has free hotspot.

I have not rooted yet. What is the best way to do that? I can follow the guide up top? I am happy to follow instructions.
    Thanks again for your help.

What's going on Mr. Herd?! Welcome to the forum! I'm happy you've decided to embark on the journey that is called root w/ us! I definitely would start by reading the sticky ROOTING For Dummies + Extras, that'll give you a much better understanding of the process and what it is you're actually doing to your Evo.

Once rooted and comfortable, I *do* recommend flashing CM7 (that is what I've been running for a while now), in the beginning, I recommend flashing a Sense based ROM. Everything works and you won't have to fix the bugs that usually come w/ running AOSP ROM's. You can find dedicated threads about ROM's forum members have tried, and see peoples experiences with it.

We're all here to help, so if you get snagged or don't understand something and need further instruction, don't hesitate to ask! Again, welcome!

Like Frenchy said, I would follow the guide up top, it is the easiest way. If you flash CM7 you are also going to need to flash the gapps which isn't hard.

@frenchy when did you turn into a Guide?

CM7 takes no additional work to install then most roms... not sure what you mean here?

    Wipe
    Flash CM7
    Flash Gapps
    Reboot

well if your gps is not working right, you have to do the gps fix. also there is the sprint vvm fix if people want to use that app instead of google voice.

Yea, I didn't have a problem with GPS luckily. I used the VVM too. Only thing I miss is the HTC dialer, can't just dial a number by typing the name in numbers for it to automatically find the name and I select it to call.

Search "dialer one" in the market it does the same thing.

There are a couple other ones that will do it that you may like better, Dialer One is just the one I use.

If you can read you can root your EVO. I have mine rooted running CM7 and if I can do it anyone can. There are videos on youtube that will help you out as well. These videos you can run and pause as you walk through the steps on your PC.
Yes you may have to do some tweaking, but thats part of the fun. If you run into trouble just get on here or XDA and some Android demigod will help you fix it. They have always come through for me on the rare occasions I get myself into a jam I can not fix.
