i want to stop using my passcode and begin just sliding a pattern to unlock my phone.

Go to Settings --> Lock Screen --> Screen Lock and select Pattern Unlock. You will enter your pattern twice to confirm it. DON'T forget the pattern! Unless you have a version of Android that has a password backup, there is no way to recover from a lost PIN/Pattern except a complete wipe of the phone!
