You can just drop them in the root of the sd card.

    Handbrake.

Just used the iphone profile, converted a 720p mkv tv show (42mins approx) in under 10 mins on my Intel Q6600. File size of original was 1.2GB, file size of output was 150MB. Quality is excellent.

Anyone managed to get a movie to play at HTC Desire native screen resolution? (480x800)

5:3 is not a recognised ratio for tv or film, doesn't mean it can't be done but some stretching would be necessary, better to just encode to a lower film conforming res and let the phone blow it up.

Newbie questions - how do I explore my SD card (so I can open files) and how do I open the default video viewer program?

Check your settings for PC connection. This needs to be set to disk drive so you can view the files on the SD card. If you have downloaded one of the many file managers just opening a video file will start the player.

Thanks, I knew how to connect to PC, just wondering if there was an inbuilt file explorer. Anyone recommend a good free file explorer? :D

What is a lower conforming res to encode to?

Using Xilisoft Ultimate Converter, I watched the Hurt Locker from a Blu Ray rip at 800x480. File came in at 1.2gb but was gorgeous quality.
