.wav and mp3 as ringtones --interaction with mediaplayer

I recently found the solution for keeping my ringtones from showing up in the music app...insert a file called '.nomedia' in the folder where I store the ringtones/notifications. Excellent! Problem is that the phone now doesn't see them as ringtones either. Does anyone know how to get around this?

found that putting the ringtones in root/audio/ringtones hides them from music player without the .nomedia file...
