Okay, my problem is similar (I think) to the grey battery issue I've heard about.

Keep in mind I know next to nothing about android devices - I've had my GS4 for a couple years now with zero problems. I love it, it has always worked perfectly for me with zero issues until last night.

I'm not 100 percent sure this is relevant, but it might be so I'll include it since it preceded the current issue by a couple hours: I received a notification about some sort of power sharing feature, telling me I needed to connect a cable in order to determine how much power would be shared. I found this odd seeing as I currently don't have a SIM card installed in the phone (am essentially just using it for wifi, like a mini tablet), and have never had any sort of power sharing app installed, and because I was not using my phone at the time (it was asleep in my pocket, I took it out to check the time and that notification was up on my lock screen.) On the notification, I tapped "Cancel" rather than "Ok". Again, I had/have no idea how this would affect my phone.

When I went to plug my phone in that night, only an hour or two after receiving the notification, I found it would not recognize the charger - my battery indicator remained as it was, without showing me the little charging bolt. The power also seems to drain very quickly.

    Things I did to troubleshoot:

    1) used a different USB cable
    2) used a different charging base
    3) every possible combination with 1 and 2 in about 4 different outlets. Double checked by using my charger with a different device. Verdict: it's not the charger.
    4) tried my roommate's battery in my phone. Again, no dice. Battery worked fine, phone still would not charge.
    5) cleaned out the charging port
    6) gently fiddled with the contacts using a toothpick, made sure they were not touching the sides of the port itself.

If I turn the phone off and plug it in, it will vibrate every 5 seconds or so while giving me the grey lightning bolt battery on the screen. I get ZERO glowing green battery. However, if I leave it like this for about an hour it will charge by about 20%. If I leave it for longer, it will charge fully but still won't "realize" it's charging/ed.

    7) I have tried a factory reset, which also has not worked. The issue is exactly the same.
    8) Performed the low bat dump thing recommended in this thread. No change in the issue.

Please please please help. Not only do I love this phone, it is my lifeline to some very dear friends and I cannot CANNOT afford to replace it at the moment :(

    Thank you in advance

Have you cleared the cache? Turn off phone > Hold Power and Volume up buttons (simultaneously) > when the phone vibrates - release the Power button but still holding the Volume button in. When the Android Recovery screen appears, release the Volume button. Use the Volume Down button to scroll down to Wipe cache partition > Press Power button > screen should return to Reboot > Press Power button > phone will Restart again. Let's know if that helps.

    Thanks for the reply

Just gave it a shot, no luck :( Still draining fast, still only takes a charge when it's turned off, still doesn't "know" it's charging.

Needless to say I'm completely stumped here...

You only use your phone on WiFi? Therefore I would tend to think you have picked up a nasty worm. I would try MalwareBytes to see if it can clean the system.

I do only use it on WiFi, haven't had a carrier in a year or two. I've had AVG installed the whole time, though again, I know next to nothing about Android systems - just figured some kind of anti-virus would be beneficial, and had good luck with AVG on my home computers in the past.

I'll give MalwareBytes a shot though and report back!
