I'm planning on picking up the Moment sometime tomorrow(since according to Best Buy it's still $99 with the 2 year contract) and ditching my old phone service for Sprint.

I've been reading here(almost as an obsession) for a few days now while I decided between iPhone/Droid/Moment or Hero. Needless to say I've chosen the Moment(maybe Hero, that remains to be seen) and I wanted to ask a few questions.

Coming from practically no knowledge of any kind of android phone or smart phone in general, is it wise to update(?) the phone by rooting and replacing kernels or whatever it is that was done to the phone recently?

Forgive the ignorance, I just don't really understand what's going on but from what I can tell it's all positive right? Will this allow me to update the Moment to Android 2.0 or 2.1 before Samsung/Sprint release the update or is it even necessary. I'm getting this phone in preparation for a project I'm going to be undertaking in school and it'll be much easier to hopefully communicate with others involved.

I also wanted to know, I've noticed on the last two Samsung phones I've gotten that the ring tones don't seem to play longer than 15 seconds. I'm hoping this isn't the case on the Moment. Sometimes I like to sleep and/or listen to my ring tone before I answer.

    Thank you for your time.

EDIT: Oh and does anyone know about any other deals besides the $99 one?

The 99$ deal is probably the best you'll get.

I've read about the rooting process but it's really a matter of choice, I've choose not to root till after the update to 2.1, and if you root you might not get that update but you can always restore the original software and then update. If you don't understand it you probably shouldn't try it at all though, you can brick the phone if you mess up and it'll kill the warranty and they'll make you by the replacement if you mess up.

As for that other question you can make ringtones from the songs on the sd card and they'll play till the song ends, or there are plenty of apps you can use to make a ringtone.

Hope these answered your questions well.

    It has indeed. Thank you.

But that being said I got the moment and I think I've got everything the way I like it. There are way too many apps for me to search through them all one by one. Anyone recommend anything for whatever purpose for the Moment or just for any android phone in general?

there is an app for that, probably.

what do you want to do? if you can describe it, well, an app for that has probably been seen by someone...

    There's a forum for that. But here's a more general thread http://androidforums.com/android-applications/1183-favorite-app-so-far.html

Plus, there are one or two threads in this forum that cover a broad spectrum of apps in just a few posts. Run a search and check out the ones in this forum to get more initial bang for your buck. Then check out the above thread to learn a few more (there's a lot of redundancy in the above thread).

Those are primarily apps I use a lot and can say they work well on the moment. Games just search for what you like. There are a lot!

There might be a lot, but I'm finding that they're essentially the same eight games done by different people lol.

One of my biggest let-downs was the discovery that the games selection for Android is closer to the level of winmo or other phones than the type and variety of games you can find on the iPhone. Hopefully soon devs will start to realize that they can write the same level of game for Android that they've been producing for the iPhone. Hopefully.

Well I think I've gotten it all I just would like some ideas on apps that replace the stock ones or add functionality to them.

I've picked up Handcent SMS and the Dolphin browser. They get the job done for me and I've not had a problem with anything on my moment so far minus figuring out how certain things are done.

I'm looking to replace the music player, im app and the e-mail app right now. I've done searches and I can't find too many recommended apps in these categories aside from posts made a few months ago. But I can seem to find people having a mess of problems with apps.

I've got a few tabs open searching for apps at the moment, maybe I'll answer my own questions today.

It's not so much that I want to replace it, it works just fine.

I'd just like to know if there are any alternatives.
