Help what are "g" and "r" ports under battery cover for?

I've noticed what appears to be antenna ports under the battery cover. Is this correct? If so, can i add an external antenna?

Well, the other day i started inserting a small 3" bare wire ito the ports to see if i can see a signal increase from either port.not sure if it 'did,but i'm wondering if it might have affected my signal since i think i dont think I'm getting the same signal as before and the texting. Is there an app that improves reception?
