Those are your notifications. They are created by Gmail, Messaging apps, and other apps when there is updated information within the respective app. The notification bar is the black bar across the top of the screen where those icons are located. Swipe you finger from the notification bar down the screen to open the notification screen. Here you see expanded information about the icons on the top left. You can tap on an entry to open the respective app and view the new info. An entry will be removed from the notification screen once it is tapped and the app opened. You can swipe the entry left or right to remove the entry without opening the app. Or you can press the Clear button to remove all entries from the list.
