Looking through my DCIM folder I find that under .thumbnails I have 200+ files each 50.00K that seem to be tied to browsing.

Do I really need them and can I setup my Desire to auto delete them if not required?

DCIM is the where the camera saves the pictures you take. The files you're talking about are actually RAW files (-rw is *nix file permissions ). RAW is a camera image format.

Based on a bit of experimenting it seems they're the thumbnails for the Gallery app. I deleted them all, took a picture & nothing appeared. However when I opened gallery they were all back (one for every picture in Gallery, not just photos).

If you delete them, they'll just reappear next time you open Gallery so no point really.
