Root What are these pullout menus for?

I have searched all over the phone for options, as well as the whole build thread, and I cant find any information. What is the point of the pullouts that say "tap icon to open application"

Only answer I have is HTC thinks that people aren't very smart

youre just not using the right apps on the tabs certain apps will have stuff there when you slide the "drawer" open- for example the email app would have your newest email there when you slide it open,and you can tap it to read it. other htc specific apps may be even more detailed and have more stuff happen than that.
