I've been looking at and considerting the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 as it would save me a little money over say a Desire or DHD..

After a new business phone and it seems to do everything I would need but what would the draw backs be only operating 1.6?

Not the expert, but for business use, I understand that 2.1/2.2 are much improved in terms of MS Exchange sync.

    Let's see...

    2.0/2.1 (Eclair)

    Optimized hardware speed
Support for more screen sizes and resolutions
New Browser UI and HTML5 support
    New contact lists
    Improved Google Maps 3.1.2
    Microsoft Exchange support
Built in flash support for Camera
    Digital Zoom
MotionEvent class enhanced to track multi-touch events
    Improved virtual keyboard
    Bluetooth 2.1

Those are what's listed as things added on over 1.6. Another thing I can tell you that should be there is better support for multi-touch use.

On a whole, I would DEFINITELY say stay away from the Sony Ericson x10. Treat it like the black plague if you have other options available. Sony is no longer supporting that phone, and it is MAJORLY crippled. To put it in perspective... think of this: The Droid X running Android 1.5 still, and missing almost every feature that Android has standard now.

Everything is improved, performance, features, new app support, etc etc.

It's like asking what Windows 7 can do that Windows 95 can't do.

A lot of stuff behind the scenes too. Providing developers with better API's and such. Honestly, Android 1.6 ain't worth it anymore.
