    Long story short:

Found a Droid incredible identical to the one I have sitting in a parking lot. It looked a bit wet on the inside of the screen (dew?), but after drying & charging the battery it started to fire up, but wasn't quite right. Tried to ID the owner to return by posting a msg on the building where I found it, but had to do a factory reset as it wasn't quite starting up right. Still not able to ID the owner.

What do I with it? Sell it on ebay? Could someone else use it as is? I don't need another droid, so I'd rather find something useful for it.

Thanks to all in advance for suggestions.

Call verizon and they can find out who the phone belongs to. THey should have you to send it in. If you sell it on ebay you will be selling stolen goods. The owner of the phone will no doubt report the phone lost and verizon will deactivate the phone and place the phones ID on the lost/stolen list.

Thought I could ID the phone's owner by getting it to work, but not so much. I'll call Verizon.

I may have a call as early as tomorrow since the owner didn't respond yet, perhaps because it is late evening. I'd want the same done for me, so I don't mind the effort.

Very good thing to do. But if that doesnt work and everything fails, sell it as a bad esn phone on ebay. Its better than the trash I guess right?

Yeah, VZW should be able to get the phone to it's owner. If nothing turns up, after 30 days, the found property is yours (In most states).

To "legalize it", take it to the police station, and turn it in as "found". They will give you a receipt, and let you know when it becomes yours.

At that point, you can get more good karma by sending it to one of the Incredible devs. They can have an experimental phone :)

I applaud the OP's honesty, but not anyone else who would hint at ways to keep the phone.

Despite me contacting Verizon 36 hours ago I've yet to hear back from them or the owner.

Oh, well. I'll just wait a bit longer. Maybe the owner is away.

The devs are the wonderful people here and/or at XDA who customize, tweak, rewrite, etc. the ROMs from the phones to create the custom ROMs you hear so much about. It's always nice for them to have a phone that they can test things on without having to muck up their daily driver phone.

Hey... going OT for a sec, I see in your profile that you have a Nook. Did you root it and use it as an Android tablet? If so, how'd that work for you? I've been considering it. I don't really need a tablet, so I don't want to pay the big bucks for one, but for the price the Nook looks like a good deal.

The "Incredible devs" are the developers who make all the cool new ROMs to flash, and also figure out ways to root phones after the carriers tried to block the last way :)

It's always handy for them to have a phone they don't need to worry about bricking (Rather than bricking the phone they use daily).

I am told the owner lives in Orange County NY or thereabouts.

Its almost 48 hours since I contacted Verizon, yet I've heard nothing back. I'll give it another week or 2.

Weird. Who thought doing the right thing would take so long & be so complicated!
