If we want 2.2 or CM6?

I know 2.2 is FroYO, but what is CM6. I googled it and got what the acronym meant, but more detail and benefits to both?

cm6 as in cryogen mod, its a rom with modified 2.2 software. I'd much rather have that imo. I'm assuming he means hes going to port both over to the DX, who knows though

I guess I am a little to confused on what these roms offer. How do they make the OS that much better? What do they include that the normal 2.1 or normal/official 2.2 OS offered by Google don't...

If you have to ask then i don't think its for you. The rooting of a phone is so that you can choose what you want on your phone. Its not for everyone. In fact only a small percentage of people who owns smart phones root them. Take a look at what each rom offers. And if you like what it has then go for it. If not, then don't worry about it. Sorry if im being a bit rash.

Everyone has to start somewhere. It's always best to ask questions and find out as much as you can before moving on with something. I'm glad that he's here asking about it instead of just assuming that he knows what he's doing and ending up bricking his phone.

Please, ask away. I would like to know more about this topic myself.

I know what rooting is. I have rooted, overclocked using the setscaling.sh file, installed a theme--my question is not what is rooting but what specifically is so special about ROMs compared to Official OS's. This board is extremely helpful---every now and then someone comes along who's stuck up---to someone curious like myself.

Paycer is right, people need to start somewhere. I am coming from a history of using flip phones--having no idea stuff like this existed. I need a 101 course in this stuff and sometimes the google method isn't the way to go. Sometimes people like droider13 and DarkMatter (many others too) come along and help out people trying to learn like myself. I am sure I am not alone when I say that I am thankful for members like them.

So once again, CM6 vs Froyo?

My main question is what is the big difference in CM6 and Regular Froyo? They both look the same in the screen shots? I know its custom, so I'll be flooded with potentially sarcastic answers of "just because it looks the same doesn't mean it is", but I'm serious when I was what are the big differences.

Cm6 is built straight from source. They compile everything. So basically they can do anything they want. Like the ability to change the track when the phone is asleep with the volume buttons. Also adding the option to the power off menu to reboot recovery. It can also add stuff like full screen browser, 360 degreee rotation of the screen, etc.

Adding to what droider13 has said, CyanogenMod (not cryogen lol) is updated frequently, sometimes every night. Whenever Google makes a change to the 2.2 code CM6 will generally have it within a few days. CM6 is also plain vanilla stock Android without any ninjablur or whatever. You can get battery percentage readouts directly in the battery meter, you can change the colors of the notification panel and the text within it, it is very easy to theme also. There are a ton of other advantages to it that I can't think of right now.
