Root What does rooting do?

im new to android and i dont get what rooting does to the nexus one... i really know nothing about.

can someone please explain to me what it is thanks

It gives you read/write access to system partitions and allows you to modify it. That means you can flash custom roms, themes, etc.

It also allows apps to access some hardware directly, which is needed to for example take screenshots or use LED flash as torch.
