Certain apps can use it so that you don't need virtual keys taking up screen space and it also makes web browsing a little easier sometimes.

I use it when moving widgets from screen to screen. Press and hold the widget with one finger, move to the proper place with the optical joystick.

The main purpose of the optical pad is to move your cursor when editing text and to navigate tiny links when you are viewing webpages. Its a HUGE help actually when navigating website links.

If you can't rely on it for gaming, then there's not much joy in the stick.

    At first I didn't get that.....then I did.

However a lot of modern games use joysticks you just don't realize. 360 and PS1/2/3 all do.

I have two joysticks for my computer. A gamepad and a flightstick.

Not every computer game is an FPS or solitaire.

I don't play PC games but I definitely understand the need for a joystick. My neighbor is in the air force and he has a military supplied joystick that is almost a exact replica out of a jet.

Sorry if it's a little irrelevant but can you assign a shortcut (e.g. phone favorites) to the optical joystick?

Besides taking a picture, this is the only thing I use it for. I have big hands and selecting just the right spot with the cursor is a little difficult.

  17. BINGO! The joystick allows for a much finer control of where you select.

Since when did the Incredible have a joystick? lol For me, I used the trackpad for moving to the exact place I want to erase/insert text, taking camera photos, and... that's it!
