Just as the title states. It might be common knowledge to most people, but I keep hearing about file managers (e.g. Astro), and I haven't got a clue why anyone would need one. It seems they are used to move files around your phone, but you can do that anyway.

    What am I missing here?

    Thanks.

You can't move around files on your phone without a file manager, although some phones already have one built in (My Files app on Samsung for example). Other people find it easier to use third party file managers, because there are categorizations for searching. For example, FX file manager has a documents category before actually going into the folder structure, so you can browse all document files in the storage.

Yes, I have a 'My Files' folder as I have a Samsung. That's why I wondered why I might need a file manager when I could use 'My Files' to move things around.

    You have explained nicely, thanks.

I use Astro to occasionally go through my SD card and remove garbage from not-quite uninstalled apps.

I use a swiss-army file manager called File Expert. It goes WAY beyond "moving files around my phone". It lets me move files between phone and PC over wifi, it lets me tap my DropBox directly, it extracts ZIP files transparently (open a ZIP, tap the APK inside, and it installs, etc). Tons more, but you get the idea.

When I pair my phone up via File Expert, on the PC side I use Directory Opus - best file manager on the planet. It let's me treat FTP sites like folders on the file system - so literally, I can hit ONE icon on my phone, and then use it like a folder - all over wifi. It's a great combination.
