I could be wrong since it's been a while since I've had a Touchwiz device, but I think that's the symbol that indicates the GPS is being utilized.

Yes, that's part of GPS/Location awareness as mentioned. If I recall correctly, one of the carriers also displays the symbol for E911 location tracking, so it only disappears if you disable that feature (who'd want to?).

My GPS icons don't look like that at all.

All my other icons (except 4G - I don't have 4G sadly) look exactly the same but that one is most definitely different to my GPS icons. I get two when GPS is active, one for GPS itself and one with satellite information.

It means your Android device is now part of the Borg, and it's apparently attacking something.

That's Verizon's E911 icon. If you root, you can remove the icon.

What's interesting is there is an icon library in the About Phone area of settings, but it's not one of the many icons shown.

The diamond shape is the E911 service and is always on. The three sound wave looking things coming from the right means that one or all of the location services has been activated. This includes the carriers own GPS service, the standalone GPS service or the WI-FI and mobile network location service.
