I turned USB debugging on in order to use EasyTether. What exactly is USB debugging? What does it do? Is it ok to always have it checked or should I only turn it on when tethering?

Over simply, USB debugging establishes a path between a device and computer for data transfer.

    I never turn mine off.

USB Debugging allows the phone and PC or other device to communicate.

USB Tethering allows you to send your phones internet signal (makes ur phone a hotspot) to other devices either through usb or wireless, depending on how you want to do it.

USB debugging is typically used by developers. There is a tool called 'adb' which allows you to shell into the device (phone) from a command prompt over USB, among other things.

There is a section over in the developer sub-forum which explains adb commands.
