So, I've been looking up this forum for a few months now here and there since I got my Sequent (I havent been too impressed with it being my first smart phone and i'm hoping this will change that) and I've recently seen A LOT of improvement really quickly. I'm just a little confused on where to begin. I've soft modded things before so i can figure most things out. I know i need to root first. After I root I should make a NAND backup, but then comes the confusing part. I see CM10, Cyanoid, Shinjitsu and CWM and CWM touch. I know Cyanoid and Shinjitsu are both roms. Is CM10 and CWM both roms also? And which ones have been reported to be most stable / beneficial to use? If I am wrong about anything or if I should do something in between doing something else that I haven't stated please leave a comment. I'm just learning this android business but I'm quick to pick it up. I just want my phone to work. Thanks in advance.
Cyanoid and shinjitsu are roms, CWM and CWM TOUCH are recovery images that you use to back up and restore your phones nand, wipe partitions, and flash roms. CM10 is Cyanogen mod 10 which is an after market version of android 4.2.1 jelly bean, and is under development for this device now but hasn't actually been released yet.
Okay. So CWM is kinda like an app, right? Would CM10 be like a kernel? I dont know the difference between jelly bean and what this phone runs. I dont even know what it runs. I'm assuming when its released its gonna be pretty vanilla right? as in no bloatware and whatnot? or would that be more of a rom issue? Like I said, I'm totally a noob at this Android stuffs.
cm10 is going to be a rom, its not ready yet tho. cwm is the nandroid backup utility, it replaces the useless stock backup program that cant even do a backup and restore to my knowledge. the only kernel out is the dtm serenity kernel
So in essence I'm gonna want to install that new kernel, cwm and a rom of my choosing? Is that new kernel worth installing or should I stick to the stock kernel? What are some pros and cons of the various roms? Thanks for helping me get my head around all this btw.
no problem at all its what we do, but that is up to you. i prefer the serenity kernel and im still using stock rom for now, some swear by cyanoid, some love shinjitsu, try them all out and see what suits you. i havent really dabbled in the roms ive been hard at work toying with cm10 trying to help get it to work. you have to install cwm first before anything else though, root the phone and install cwm, that is the only way to be able to get any kernels or roms onto the phone. that is why development is just getting going because we just recently got cwm working well, without it, no one could do anything
Awesome, thank you guys! Helped me out a lot, greatly appreciated. Also, sorry about posting this in the wrong section. I didnt know there was a pre-section for posts like this.
