Whats an app that sends sms with a fake number?

I still don't see how it is then legal to use an app that sends an SMS/MMS over your internet connection as a real SMS/MMS to someone else.

HeyWire: Free SMS Worldwide - Android app on AppBrain

This would be one of those apps in question. With this I can impersonate anyone I want. All it actually takes is signing up for the service free of charge.

I'm not positive about that app, but I'm pretty sure all the texting websites, where you can send texts online instead of from your phone, DONT use a real person's cell number. yes, it uses a real phone number, but that's different from these spoofing apps, where you could send a text or call and make it look like you are somebody else.

Calling someone or SMSing with a different number is not illegal at all. If it was, things like Skype Out would be illegal. When I use my phone to Skype Out or Skype SMS, people often see a Hong Kong(+852xxxxxxxx) or sometimes a Shanghai(+8621xxxxxxxx) number, but I'm nowhere near these places. When I call the UK, people see a British(+44xxxxxxxxxx) number, even though I'm in China.

DailyTech - Caller ID Spoofing Now Illegal in the U.S.

http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/getdoc.cgi?dbname=111_cong_bills&docid=f:h1258rh.txt.pdf

According to that website, and the pdf of the House Bill, caller id spoofing IS illegal in the entire US. And by reading that bill, it seems like ANY kind of spoofing, even text spoofing because it still shows your phone number, is illegal.

Any idea how Skype Out works with this in the US? Because AFAIK Skype always gives false and seemingly random numbers for Skype Out calls. Does Skype Out operate differently here, as regards caller ID?

illegal? I don't think so.

SmsTouch for the iPhone has this feature. I've been using it for well over a year and it's even on the App Store. When I switched over to Android I tried to find an app like it. Because of my work and lifestyle I carry multiple sim cards. So now that that's cleared up, are there any apps on Android that allow a person to send an sms from whatever number they chose?

First, thanks for bringing up a month old thread. Second, Just because the iphone allows it, doesnt mean its legal. Third, I posted a link here:

that proves its illegal.

Illegal or not if you dont like the views posted thats fine don't respond. If it turns out to be illegal whatever you were warned. All spoofing apps even if you do trust that its not illegal should be USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

If some guy you dont know goes to jail for spoofing who cares! Illegal or not is irrelivant the question was where do you get the apps to do it not the legality.

If moderators think its illegal they will close the tread problem solved. You cant fight in a grey area which is what spoofing is right now. Its like torrents in Canada its not illegal but one day it probably will be.

Also I read through the guidelines to see and talking about illegal app, however frowned upon it probably is is not in there (links to illegal apps however are). Therefore talking about what exists from a purely "knoledge based" standpoint is not against the rules. But actively aiding the distribution is.

So basically what you're saying is Apple, the same Apple that notoriously and anally moderates what is allowed on their app store, has allowed this and ONLY this one illegal product to stay on their for years? lol

I don't think so. Maybe you should look again. This is NOT a cydia app. This is an App Store product. So either 1) Apple has a shitty legal department, 2) this developer has Steve Jobs on speed dial (hey Steve-o, my smstouch app, just let this one slip under the radar ok buddy? we still on for golf next weekend?), or 3) you're full of shit.

And you could refrain from making posts that have nothing to do with the thread topic.

Pretty sure it started somewhere...

Which if you read the forum rules, we don't talk about Illegal Activities here.

Did that have to do with the thread topic??

Rather than answering the question of what the app was called, someone had to go off on an ethical rant.

Don't think that was the question.

Thanks, I appreciate it.

I bet I'm gonna get in BIG TROUBLE. I should probably leave the forums.

People on moderator trips... are trippin! Authority Envy?

The bill makes it illegal "to cause any caller ID service to transmit misleading or inaccurate caller ID information, with the intent to defraud and deceive."

It applies to both land lines and voice-over-IP networks (VoIP) and any other "real time voice communications service, regardless of the technology or network utilized."

OP... were you going to defraud anyone... and were you calling anyone? I didn't see you say that.

Done. :)

From the Site Rules & Guidelines:

Do not post the following, or links to (including but not limited to): Porn, Drugs, Hate, Terrorism or anything else you imagine should be listed here. People can do what they want elsewhere, but we're not looking to provide direction to these things.
Basically, if there's any doubt as to legality then it's off-limits. This is purely to protect Android Forums.
