Whats up With Handcent?

I recently download the handcent sms app. It works really awesome. I was getting 2 notifications when I recieved an txt. I now turned off the notifications on the Android messaging but my question is, Is there a way to force close the Android messaging so the handcent is the only one running?

You have a few options. The non-root method is to simply open the stock messaging app and disable all of the options for notification. The second option is to remove it via ADB (or if using a custom ROM, not even load it on the ROM). However, once you disable the notifications, you won't even know it's there. It won't consume any meaningful resources.
