I hear some jobs touting a 'work from home' option, which may seem great, but is it?

If I'm working in a team, I like to be around the other people. Instant messaging and conference calls are fine, but there's no substitute for face to face comms, in my opinion. Most human communication is non verbal, so you lose all that on an audio conference call.
Working remotely can also be quite isolating, for me anyway. Plus if you have a family, there may be distractions that you wouldn't get if you were in the office.

What do you reckon? Would you love a job where you could work purely from home?

All of that. I do work from home and hate it. When it was just a couple times a week it was great, but full time really just sucks.

It depends what I'm doing. Some things it's vital to talk to people in person, but often if I've a specific task I want to get on with I find it more effective to just work from home (never mind the time it saves not travelling). So having the option works for me.

Yes the not travelling aspect does appeal, a lot. But in practice, the only way I could see it really working for me, is if I was doing a project that involved only myself. I can very happily work on Android app projects and other things as personal projects. And that's great because I get to make all the technical decisions :)

I need the quiet of home to get certain things done, which is why at least one day a week is in my contract. Granted there are aspects of a job that work better with immediate communication, but at times it just becomes a constant cacophonous interruption and nothing gets done.

Depends, work at home is good for people who are disabled, single parents. Everyone has different needs.

I've never worked from home but I suspect it's much like being self employed which I have been for many years. It takes a certain amount of discipline and self motivation. If I could do the work I do daily from home I'm certain I'd be more productive. I enjoy the social aspects of working in a group but often it seems that people just want to kill time and my time gets killed right along with theirs.
