When Selecting Keyboard Get Message About Lock Screen

I installed the Hacker keyboard. I click the okay on the usual warning about the keyboard app being able to collect data. Then I get a second message that doesn't happen with the other keyboard I had installed. That message is:

"Note: If you restart your phone and have a screen lock set, this app can't start until you unlock your phone"

It sounds like if I set Hacker as my default keyboard and I restart my phone, I won't be able to unlock the phone. If that is what it means, why would I use it? I've had it happen on another keyboard I wanted to try also.

Open hacker keyboard and make it default

Yes but, what does the message mean? Sounds like if I have the screen lock on restart (which I do) I may not be able to unlock the phone. That is why I'm hesitant to do that. Want to be sure I will be able to unlock my phone if I do.

If that's the case then everyone using hacker keyboard would be locked out of their phones

That is what I thought. I just find it odd why the phone would give me that message. SwiftKey didn't give me that message so it gave me pause.

I've used both with no issues. I prefer SwiftKey myself

Yeah, I tend to agree with you. I've played around with it and it has some features that I would find useful but, I got used to swiping that I am not sure I can go back to the thumb pecking again. I was just trying something different and Hackers was the second keyboard I tried that gave me that message. So, I was just curious why I would get that message and what it means. It must be a warning for something otherwise, why give it?

You should in any case be able to restart into safe mode..but do this

You are interpreting the message wrong.

Basically, what the message is telling you is that if your device is locked after a restart, Hacker's Keyboard cannot start unless the phone is unlocked.

If you don't need the keyboard to unlock the device, or need to use the keyboard while the device is locked, then there is no problem.

The app won't start running until the keyboard is unlocked.

So, if my unlock code was a pin (4 digit number) I wouldn't have an issue. However, if my unlock code required more than just numbers (thus the need for a keyboard), I wouldn't be able to unlock the phone or would the phone use one of the other keyboards that could start while the phone is locked?

I am assuming that is possible.

I do believe that the device will open any useable keyboard just like you say.

Personally, I leave three keyboards on my devices.
I do not use a password that requires the keyboard, so I cannot guarantee anything- but I can tell you that I have done so in the past, and I have seen the message that you describe. I have never had any issue with a keyboard not allowing me to unlock, and the device has switched keyboards on its own after restarts and such.

The three that I keep on all of my devices are

    Hacker's Keyboard (Four- or five-row soft-keyboard) - https://f-droid.org/packages/org.pocketworkstation.pckeyboard

Simple Keyboard (Simply keyboard and nothing more) - https://f-droid.org/packages/rkr.simplekeyboard.inputmethod

Tiny Keyboard (The smallest possible keyboard) - https://f-droid.org/packages/rkr.tinykeyboard.inputmethod

Not sure, but I think at least one of them does NOT show that message, but really can't remember.

Thank you!! This is what I was looking for. Someone that confirms they have seen the message and has not had any issues. Fortunately, mine doesn't require a keyboard to unlock it either but, just in case that changes down the road I didn't want to restart my phone afterwards and be surprised.

FYI: Tiny Keyboard appears to not exist anymore. At least on F-Droid.

    It is there.

You need to first have the F-Droid app, and then add a repository to it in the settings.

This repository has many, many apps that are excellent.

If you have the F-Droid app, clicking the link above may take you directly to the repository settings add page in the app.

Okay, I just clicked on the link to it that you provided in your last post on my desktop and it comes up with a 404 Page Not Found error. So I assumed it was no longer available. I clicked on the link to read about it first.
