If you're using the stock multi-touch keyboard, it's the bottom right button. Hold it down for additional smileys.

Not sure what you mean. Both the swype and multi-touch keyboard have a smiley face in the bottom right corner. As far as I know there are no other smiley faces that come stock.

They show up as pictures once you send the text.

Whether they'll do that or not on your friend's phone depends on how it interprets the emoticon.

Like I said, hold the button down for more options.

There may be other keyboards that have pics for the emoticons, but I doubt you'll find any that function as better keyboards than the stock multitouch or Swype.

Whoops! Seems like Motorola changed that for the X. On the default Android MMS app, it certainly does.

You can see for yourself in Google Talk. That is the behavior it had on my Droid, but the custom MMS app on the DX apparently does not support it.

Guess you'll need to download Handcent or ChompSMS to see the emoticons then.

Sorry, I hadn't even tried in the MMS app before now, only in Talk!

I posted a thread about this not long ago. I miss the android smilies!!!! :( Is there an app that will simply include them on the phone? I don't want anything else to change, just want the additional droid smilies
