Where do my read mail messages go?

After I read an email, my phone keeps if for a day or so, then deletes it. I don't want it to delete any emails without my approval. Why is it doing this and is there something in settings that will prevent it from deleting emails from my phone? I've spent what seems like hours going through the email settings menus and cant' find anything. Is there something in the general settings menu? Please help. I'm running the stock HTC mail program. Thanks.

when in Mail
Menu>More>Settings>Send & Receive>Download Optioins

Yours is probably set to By Days, Todays

You can set it to keep a particular number of messages or to keep a certain number of days worth of messages. For instance if you want a week's worth of email, set it to By Days, 7 days.
