Where is all my data going?

Finally, I gave up my unlimited Verizon plan. The $20 was more than I could bear for only using about 2.2 GB a month, and I needed the unlimited minutes.

So now that I gave it up, my data is using is going through the roof. My month ends on March 20 and I'm already at 3.5 GB (my wife at 1.5 GB, so close to our 6 GB limit). Where is it going? I have moved from Florida to Pennsylvania during this time, but I thought I was able to get on and use Comcast's wifi. I even turned off my data usage and every day my data usage is still going up by about 0.1 GB. Anyone know where all this data is being used?

  2. Did you try running in Safe Mode disabling all apps you added without uninstalling them? If it stops it is caused by an app that you added.

Only you can tell. Go into settings / data usage. That will give you details which apps are using data and how much. You can even tap an app and tell it not to use background data, so you'll know that the app is only using data when it's in the foreground.

(You can also set the data usage cycle to your actual monthly period so you can see how it's gone up as the month has gone by.)

Thanks for the suggestions. When I look at Data Usage, I had previously timed it with my billing period. It says 1.57 GB (which sounds right and from the apps I usually use) but the Verizon app says I've used 3.53 GB (much higher than usual) and my wife has used 1.52 GB (about right).

So maybe the question is, why isn't my phone's data usage matching Verizon?

That's a good question and I would call Verizon wireless tech support to see if they can help you figure it out. I know that phone meters aren't perfect but they're usually closer than you are reporting. (Mine always was with the Maxx.)

One thing I am thinking of: maybe you have weak wifi in parts of your house? There is a setting in wifi advanced settings to avoid poor connections. Maybe your phone is switching to mobile data when you have a wifi connection but is reporting it as wifi?

Settings / wifi, tap menu control bottom right, tap advanced, see if avoid poor connections is on.

But do also call Verizon to see if you can get an answer.

Duh, I figured it out. With my change in plan, the first readout on my usage is combined my wife and I (as opposed to before, me then my wife). So I haven't used 3.5 and my wife 1.5 almost at 6. Rather, I've used 1.5, my wife 2, for a total of 3.5, with lots of room before we hit 6 in 4 days.

Good deal. Well, it's good to know the data usage meter is right. Though it always was for me...
