I have a Motorola Moto E running Android 5.1 (Lollipop). I want to download the pictures in the Gallery to my computer via a USB cable. If I could find them in the file structure (with ES File Explorer, say) I could do it, but I haven't been able to find them. Where is the Gallery stored? If it isn't visible for some reason, is there a way to move the pictures in the Gallery to another location from which I could download them?

It depends. If you have your camera set to store photos on SD card then they are stored there. If you have it set to store them on internal storage then they are usually stored under Pictures or DCM.
If you just use a file explorer and dig around they are easy to find.

Alas, I can't find them with ES File Explorer or, for that matter, using my computer and MTP. I can see them by going to the Gallery app, but I can't see how to actually get at the contents of the Gallery. I've explored the (visible) file system with no success, including such obvious places as DCIM.

Found them at last! They were on the SD card, and I guess that the images in the Gallery were really links to those files.

Yes, the gallery is similar to the Picture library in Windows. The Android media scanner collects all images on your device and combines them for the gallery. So technically you can have photos from many different locations there.

Got it!! The Gallery doesn't contain pictures -- it contains pointers to pictures. Once I realized that, everything became clear.

My favorite piece of advice is always, if you want to know your device, know the file system. That's basically the Heart. Sounds like you are doing just that. :)
