I want to know very clearly which pre-installed applications on my Samsung Captivate might charge me fees for using.

Is it only ones with AT&T in front of the name? (IE: AT&T Navigator, not Navigation.)

Or are there others as well? I haven't opened some apps because I'm worried about accidentally getting charged, or missing tiny print that mentions fees. (YPmobile, Where, MobiTV, Mobil Video - sorry if any of these are obvious, this is my first smartphone, first Android experience, first time dealing with apps)

I asked when I bought the phone, but I know the sales person was misinformed. (She insisted the Maps and Navigation charged monthly fees, I said I'd partially chosen the Captivate because it came with those apps that gave basically what AT&T is charging monthly fees for ... anyhow, she stuck to it and insisted not to open them because I'd be charged monthly for them as well. She said to download a Google Maps app, which ... is the same as "Maps" that came on my phone, no?)

I had the same question, so I understand why asking. If you want to hide these apps without hacking your phone, download and install Launcher Pro, it is free and there is an option to hide applications.

Anyways, as far as I know these will charge you monthly fee if you use them (and you must sign up to use them)
    AT&T Famly Map
    AT&T Music
    AT&T Navigator
    AT&T Radio
Media Hub (but I think this is to buy stuff, but free to use)
    Mobile Video

The others, are free (at least I have used them and not been charged). I do not AT&T maps is free to use, but it will keep trying to open AT&T navigator and that costs.

Here are Market (free) apps you can use

AT&T Famly Map - Lookout will kinda do this
AT&T Music - None really, maybe Amazon?
AT&T Navigator - Google Navigator (free turn by turn)
AT&T Radio - Pandora or Slacker Radio
    Mobile Video - Youtube
MobiTV - Flash TV (You will have to wait untill 2.2 comes out)
Where - Google maps or Places

Great, thank you very much! I would love this info to be added to CapFAQ, it's nice to know to just flat out AVOID these apps if you're worried about getting roped into more monthly fees.

I almost want to go back and show the sales person how Maps and Navigation are indeed free as I tried to explain, but I didn't want to get into it. :p I knew the AT&T were related to charged (figures), but I'm glad to have clarification on the others. I don't think I "need" MobiTV, Where, etc - but at the same time, I appreciate the alternatives!

Having reset my phone, I'm trying to get my apps back and mess with settings again, etc. I had gone ahead and tried Home Switcher and Launcher Pro, even bought the plus version to support it. I didn't play much, but the ability to hide icons is a HUGE plus in my book. Even if I know which apps to avoid, I worry a bit about someone else playing with my phone and accidentally incurring charges/fees for me. Avoiding them completely is awesome.

Early on, I clicked on "where" and on my next bill I see a $2.99 charge. I called ATT and they said it's a 3rd party app they can't do anything about. When I clicked on where, it gave me no warning about a charge. So the ATT rep said I could put a purchase PIN on my account, which I told her to shove it. Finally they discontinued the ridiculous 2.99/month subscription but I had to pay the initial 2.99. I suppose I could have argued more, but for 2.99 I have better things to do

Yeah, my sister fell into the Where trap. Funny thing is, I had that a year and a half ago on the G1 (on T mo) and it was free, why the pre-install and the charge I have no idea, but it really isn't even that good of an app...

Apparently on the AT&T Radio and Navigator app, just opening the app accepts the terms and activates it, because she did that too, and AT&T was extremely reluctant to disable them- so beware of those icons. I re-arranged the app "drawer" so that they are like two screens to the right of all the other apps (you can create placeholder screens by putting a single, little used app on it) so there is no danger of accidental touches...

I have purchase pins on all the phones on my account. The pin doesn't interfere with your purchases in the Market. The pin prevents the notorious 3rd party charges from ever hitting your account. I highly recommend putting that on your phone.
