Root Which PC36IMG might help fix bootloop?

So, I am stuck in a bootloop. I have done research and tried everything I can think of (including smacking it against random stuff).

This would happen every once in a while, but normally I could get it working just by shaking it or pressing the power button multiple times. Right now, it's been like this for 3 days, and I'm having no luck.

I've wiped it, I tried to click on recovery, but it just goes back into bootloop, I don't even get a triangle with an exclamation point.

My last option that I can think of is to do the PC36IMG thing I've read about. I found one and tried it, but it said "Main version is older."

I bought the phone used without an sd card, so I don't know if maybe since I am not using the regular sd card, that the phone isn't able to recover, or maybe it just is really messed up, lol.

The phone isn't rooted or unlocked, and never has been. I am just posting this here because I think I will gain better replies from you rather than in the problems forum, as the PC36IMG is more based on root (at least from what I know).

When I get to the Bootloader screen I see this:

***LOCKED (OOW)***
SUPERSONIC EVT2-3 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT- 2.18.0001
MICROP-04IF
TOUCH PANEL ATMELCO3_16ac
RADIO- 2.15.00.12.19

Thanks for all your help.

I am kind of worried because it is version

HBOOT- 2.18.0001

But I am hoping someone will tell me I can still do it with this Hboot version :)

I am trying to hook it up to a computer, but I can't seem to get the computer to recognize the phone, so yea, there's that...

Hello snowboardz! Merry Christmas!
The hboot version you have is not the concern as far as I know, we just need to know what software version you are on.
Is it 4.67.651.1 or 5.07.651.1. That info would be found in the "about phone" tab.
Your radio is the latest radio, and just curious, which PC36IMG file did you try?
Can you post a link or post back here what it was? :)

Edit: Also, what causes these bootloops? Random? I find it curious you can get past that by smacking the phone etc:p Could it be an old battery that the contacts are going bad and appears to shut off and restart?

Hey, thanks for the reply. I'm not sure which software I'm using, as I can't get the phone to turn on :)

I was wondering if maybe the battery contacts have gone bad. I'm currently backpacking right now, and have been for the past 5 months. The phone has been in airplane mode this whole time. I just use it like a tablet on WiFi and also as a camera.

Since I'm traveling and going long times without charging, I purchased two extra batteries off Ebay before I left. They appear to be legit HTC batteries, same model number and look as the original. But maybe swapping the batteries on a regular basis has caused some damage to the contacts, as well as the heat and humidity and what not from backpacking in SE Asia.

Here is a link to the latest PC36IMG file I tried.
Dev-Host - PC36IMG_SuperSonic_GB_Sprint_WWE_4.67.651.3_Radio_2.15.00.12.19_NV_2.33_release_234563_signed.zip - The Ultimate Free File Hosting / File Sharing Service

I also tried one other, I think it was this one
Dev-Host - PC36IMG_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.70.651.1_Radio_2.15.00.11.19_NV_1.90_release_161482_signed.zip - The Ultimate Free File Hosting / File Sharing Service

It's going to sound silly, but when the phone initially reset this final time, I was changing the date manually to the following day in order to "cheat" and gain more grabs for the game Prize Claw.

I feel like it was almost powering up, and getting close (to the point where it used to get to in the past, and then magically it would proceed). However, I was getting frustrated, and decided to wipe the hard drive through the HBoot menu, and since then is when it hasn't even came close to firing up.

Someone, anyone? Haha.

I am in Bangkok and I checked with a couple places here that claim to HTC places (who knows if they are or not). But they both think it's a software OS problem, but they can't fix it because it's an American phone and HTC won't send that info overseas.

Any help is appreciated. I don't want to buy another phone or device until I return home in a couple months.

Mikestony - I am able to get into the bootloader menu by holding down the volume down button and then power button at the same time.

Ocnbrze - I can't access the main settings in my phone to turn on the debugging, unless there is another way to do it. I can only access the bootloader menu.

Any more tips? I'm about to throw in the towel on this, but I don't really want to. I don't like to give up on electronic devices, and I want to win this battle!

Interesting note - Usually when you charge the phone with the power off, the red light flashes. However, since this issue has been present, the red light stays on constantly while the battery is charging and the power off.

well if you have no access to the phone to get the ruu.exe to work and the PC36IMG (the only that will work for you is the 4.67 software version) files do not work, then i can think of anything else you can try. it makes it harder that you are not rooted as well.

so hopefully you have insurance or something.

If you have adb/fastboot handy, you can find out the main version by choosing FASTBOOT from the HBOOT menu.

Once the screen changes to say FASTBOOT USB, issue the following command from a command prompt opened to the folder where the fastboot.exe is:

Code:
fastboot getvar mainver

If it is indeed 5.07.651.1, there's not much you can do. If you've tried the PC36IMG that ocnbrze suggested already, and it gave you that "Main Version is older" message, you're probably stuck. You can flash an RUU with the phone connected in HBOOT, so you may want to try that as well.

You could unlock it with HTCDev, which may allow us to flash a custom recovery, but if you can't get to recovery now, it's unlikely that'll help (unless the recovery partition has simply been erased).

Well, I didn't think I could run an .exe file since I wasn't able to access my phone. I just tried the one ocnbrze listed, and I was able to get it to find my phone, and run through a couple prompts. It brought up an HTC logo on my phone with a black screen that I had never seen before.

It got through processing, but said it couldn't complete, I tried it twice. I also was able to find that my phone is version 5.07.651.1

Is there another ROM update or RUU file or something I should try? I was excited for a minute, because this is the most progress I have made. I still don't have any hopes, but man it would be awesome if it fired back up.

It gets to updating signature, about 10% on the progress bar, then says:

The ROM update utility cannot update your Android Phone

Please get the correct ROM update utility and try again

From what I understand of Cap't post, if you have version 5.07.xxx, there is no PC36IMG, or RUU.exe that will work.
Also, from what I understand, if I read the Capt's post correctly, you can try to unlock the bootloader and install custom recovery. He says it's unlikely, but hey, why not try.? You've exhausted all other options as far as I can tell.
I think if you can install a recovery after unlocking, you can flash a rom.
Just my thoughts.
Ocn?

Okay, cool, thanks for the help. I will focus on unlocking bootloader and looking for a custom recovery.

I feel like I am screwed anyway, but like I said, I don't like to give up on this stuff, so I'm willing to try all options :)

I would contact HTC, explain your situation, and ask for the PC36IMG or RUU files. I've heard of them giving them out before.

I'm in Bangkok at the moment, and out of the US for another month of so. I went to one here in Bangkok, but they told me that since it's an American phone, HTC won't send that info overseas.

Bootloader unlocked! Boom-shaka-laka!

It is still in bootloop, but for some reason every once in a while it takes twice as long before it restarts as it used to. Probably nothing to look too much into, maybe just me getting easily excited, haha.

Anyways, which is the best recovery to use?

I will do a search now for a recovery, but if you guys have one that you recommend more than others, let me know.

*Fingers crossed*

Damn. Still in bootloop.

Here is what I did, let me know if I missed something:

Downloaded custom recovery listed above.
Placed it on root of empty formatted 4GB SD Card
Held down volume down and power button to load Bootloader on phone.
The phone read it, and asked "Do you want to start update"
I clicked yes.
Update complete, do you want to Reboot?
First I tried yes, it went to botloop.
I tried again, selected no at this point, went back and selected recovery, and it instantly went into bootloop.

Should I try also installing a ROM? Am I missing a step? Or am I pretty much done?

Thanks!

If you can't get to recovery, you're officially in the "bootloop of death," from which no one has recovered successfully, to my knowledge. Sorry.

@snowboardz...and the Cap't would know! If there was a way to fix it, he would know. Sometimes I think he designed, developed, programmed and gave birth to this phone;)
I am sorry, but he is correct.:(
