Why cant i see my texts

I texted someone earlier today and they texted me back. i only saw a snippit of our conversation i saw the first thing i said and then the thing they sent back. my phone kept telling me i was getting text messages but i couldnt see them. id open up my messaging app and it wouldnt even display that i got a new text or the order of my contacts. what is going on because i really really really dont want to factory reset my phone i have texts and pictures i would like to keep

Without seeing the phone and trying a few things?

Your carrier is messing up.

Your messaging app is corrupt.

Your phone is broken.

You're in such a poor signal area that your phone can't receive whole message packets.

If it's only happening with this one person, all that can apply to his carrier, app, etc.
