It's not only Apple, AFAIK there's many devices that are always exclusive to Verizon and can only be had from Verizon, e.g. Droid phones and Ellipsis tablets. I'm sure there's other exclusive lock-ins as well, with AT&T, Sprint, etc. We certainly don't have anything like that here in People's Republic of China. Phones here are always unlocked, no subsidies, no mandatory contracts, and will usually work on any network, and quite democratic actually.

Quite frankly I've got idea that some US carriers are more akin to Stalinist dictatorships than freedom and democracy. Verizon Wireless "Big Red = Big Brother". :)

I like having the freedom an android gives you - apple pushes out OTAs on their devices every 2 years drastically killing their performance so people will buy the newer stuff. Also, I don't like being a corporate tool and slave to society, and the idea of buying stuff just to show off disgusts me when there are still so many people in the US that don't have food and shelter this winter.

My wife has never had this issue of Apple purposely slowing down a device.
She has been an iPhone user since the 3g and is currently the 6 plus

She went from the 3g to the 4 and stayed with the 4 until 6 months ago.

The only way I can believe is if she just uses her phone as a phone... I had the 4 and i remember within the next year the internet was blowing up with people complaining about how the latest ios update rendered their phones too slow to do anything, because apple is all about planned obsolescence to get people to keep upgrading - in the store they tell you the products will last a lifetime, when you call tech support they tell you that your 2 year old devices is obsolete, you should upgrade.

You don't have to update an iPhone: my daughter used to have a 4s, and when friends who updated theirs found them running slower she just didn't update (she didn't like Johnny Ive's changes to the UI anyway, so didn't consider it a loss).

She uses her phone like I do... She uses social media apps, texting, internet browsing, and phone calls.
You don't HAVE to believe me. You can assume that I like to get onessage boards and lie for the sake of lieing......

The same could apply to any Android device. If you're still getting OS updates after 2yrs consider yourself very fortunate.

I don't believe Apple tech support would tell an owner their 2yr-old device is "obsolete". The iPhone 5S, for example. is still in production and happily running the latest iOS.

Everything (eventually) becomes obsolete, period. The question here is, at what time? OEMs cannot support devices indefinitely. ;)

As @justanotherguy is so readily able to point out, the average iPhone gets supported with updates for well after the standard battery would have run out, been taken in to AppleCare to get replaced (twice), and again by a third party shop when that one goes flat, too.

On the Android side, it's like pulling teeth to get Samsung to even remember they still have Galaxy phones to support 90 days after launch, much less for anything that's still more than hardware capable enough to run a newer Android OS.

Motorola pretty much stopped making anything for the MXPE as soon as Lenovo bought them; who would rather try and sell us even worse knock-offs of the previously solid brand. It seems on Android, we're lucky to even get phones that stay supported until the very first units start failing because all their non-removable batteries go flat.

Thanks codezer0 ... and that is the reason I have been entirely a nexus guy, at least I get support for some amount of time..
I can't imagine having to have bloatware AND wait 6 months after everyone else to get updated.. but now the google phones have risen in price to everything else.....making me wonder what keeps my tied to the google tree..

I mean before a decent phone was pretty cheap, now they are not and google is nose deep in every aspect of my life...is it worth the tradeoff?

    you are missing my point...

apple wanted to raise profits.. by NOT paying for services they promised on older devices... the facetime through a 3rd party service. which they contracted for.

apple designed a fix in the new 7...
apple broke facetime on older versions... on purpose!!!
only way to fix it is to .. upgrade to 7
and people with older devices.. dont want to upgrade because it will cripple the device.
so even though they do get updates.. they know it is just for show.
100% of my apple friends.. know not to update on 2 yrs or older devices.
they know they need to purchase a new apple device!

side note.. android devices are not all by google.
if you get a google device (nexus etc...).. then you would get more updates.

Okay, the OP's question was "Why did you choose Android instead of IOS?" Let's keep the replies on-topic, please. ;)

There's a perfectly good thread here if you want to complain about non-replaceable batteries, while discussions about Apple's devices belong in The Lounge.

Today is the last day of my monthly phone contract. This is a screen shot of the total data usage for this month.

I spend more time on 4G with my Note4 than my wife does on her iPhone 6 Plus. I spend a lot of time watching YouTube and uploading to YouTube, Facebook, instagram, twitter, emails etc. My wife checks Facebook a couple of times a day on 4G while at work with her iPhone, and then waits until she gets home on the wifi before doing much more. But for some reason the iPhone loves chewing through the data when your not even using it.

    Screenshot_20170212-151141.jpg

This is just one of many reasons I no longer own an iPhone.

On my Android phone, i have the option of a memory card plus I get normal USB connectivity i.e. no having to use iTunes for data transfer.

I do have an iPad so I don't have total iPhobia

Left is China Unicom, right is EE UK.

On my Android phone I have the option of using two SIMs. Apple has never done a dual-SIM iPhone.

Because Android has nothing to do with Steve Jobs and the inheritors of his evil empire.
