In the subway at least, it always goes to h.fb.xxxxxx...and then to Facebook notifications...

That sounds like the home page on a browser is being activated, or the FB app is not configured correctly.

Which are you using, the FB app, or a browser: or what is actually coming up?

you typed out a URL, which makes me thing a browser.

I'm definitely not using the FB app, I'm not even sure a browser, I'm just clicking on the screen that comes up to log onto the free wifi.

I'd not use the free Wi-Fi then. Something is going on and if it was me I would not be using it

Probably the "free" WiFi itself is redirecting to Facebook. Facebook might be paying the WiFi provider to do it, i.e. it's an ad!

Free WiFi is often filled with advertising.

there is no such thing as a 'Free lunch', someone has to pay the bills.

and it sounds like that particular 'WiFi' connection you have is an advertisement, I would find a different WiFi signal and see if the issue goes away.
