1. Are you ready for the Galaxy S20? Here is everything we know so far!

Why does the J3 take three steps to power down?

    J3, Android version 7.0

    Two questions:

    • 1. Why must one do three tasks to power down the phone?

    a) side button press
    b) screen confirm off
    c) drawn dot pattern

Why the complexity and precaution for a simple power off? The S5 powers down immediately when pressing power off. (Android V 6.0.1)

    • 2. How to make the screen dot pattern always appear on startup? Now one must swipe the screen to have the pattern appear, then draw the pattern?

It's two actions to power down the phone isn't it? Sometimes three actions.

    A) side button press.
    B) tap either "power off" or "restart". Because you might want to just reboot the phone rather than turning it off completely.

That's what it is on a Huawei Mate 10 and a Samsung Galaxy S7 I've got, with Android 9.0 and 8.0 respectively.

    C) If the phone was locked, the pattern unlock, is a security feature to try an stop a thief turning it off.

The pattern or PIN unlock usually does appear when turning on without doing anything else. Unless there's an extra third-party lock-screen installed. Some rogue apps do that, like Peel Remote. Which was on some Samsungs, like S5.

    Nope.

    1. press side button
    2. select power off white button
    3. red button power off appears. Press it, and
    4. dot pattern appears. Trace it, then it powers off.

On my S5, hit power off and it shuts down. Simple.

Is there a setting preference on the J3 ?

    On the S7 with 8.0 I've got here it's:

    1. Press side button.
    2. Red "power off" appears, tap it, phone turns off. And the other option is green "restart".
    3. If the phone was locked, dot pattern appears, trace it, then it powers down.

Unlocking to power down is a security feature that was added, in case a thief tries to quickly turn the phone off. Because a phone that's off, is pretty much impossible to track and locate. It won't stop a thief removing the SIM of course. The only way to not have it, is to have no lock on the phone at all.

My Galaxy S7 with 8.0 is more recent than the S5 or J3 with 7.0. Samsung may have changed things again with S8, S9, etc and Android 9.0?
