Why don't some apps update automatically?

I've wondered this for a while. I have auto update turned on for my apps. And although many apps do update automatically, I often get a notification that I have updates available. When I select it, it takes me to Google Play, where I have to select "Update All" to get the updates to start.

I thought it only did that when an update needed additional permissions. But it doesn't ask me for any more permissions after I select to update.

Any ideas?

So you're saying that if I ignore the notification and just wait, they will eventually update automatically? I can't say that I've tried that. So will do next time I get the notification.
